Tertiary companions to close spectroscopic binaries
We have surveyed a sample of 165 solar-type spectroscopic binaries (SB)with periods from 1 to 30 days for higher-order multiplicity. Asubsample of 62 targets were observed with the NACO adaptive opticssystem and 13 new physical tertiary companions were detected. Anadditional 12 new wide companions (5 still tentative) were found usingthe 2MASS all-sky survey. The binaries belong to 161 stellar systems; ofthese 64 are triple, 11 quadruple and 7 quintuple. After correction forincompleteness, the fraction of SBs with additional companions is foundto be 63% ± 5%. We find that this fraction is a strong functionof the SB period P, reaching 96% for P<3d and dropping to34% for P>12^d. Period distributions of SBs with and withouttertiaries are significantly different, but their mass ratiodistributions are identical. The statistical data on the multiplicity ofclose SBs presented in this paper indicates that the periods and massratios of SBs were established very early, but the periods of SB systemswith triples were further shortened by angular momentum exchange withcompanions.

The Status of ROSAT X-ray Active Young Stars toward Taurus-Auriga
We present an astrometric study of the candidates of T Tauri stars (TTS)and non-TTS X-ray sources around Tau-Aur, based on the HipparcosCatalogue and the ACT Reference Catalogue. The ROSAT selected X-raysources are found to be a mixed population. A few of them areassociated with the Tau-Aur or Orion Star Forming Regions (SFR). Some,with distances similar to that of Tau-Aur but with discrepant propermotions, are probable or sure Pleiades super-cluster members or otherlate type young active stars with unresolved nature, more likely tooriginate in rapidly moving cloudlets, or else having originated fromdifferent sites other than Tau-Aur and moved to the present locations. Agood many of the non-TTS X-ray sources are considered as Hyades clustermembers. Some TTS candidates could be foreground pre-main sequencestars or actually young dwarfs not yet depleted of their Lithium. Underthe hypothesis that the sources we studied are representative of theROSAT selected TTS candidates discovered in the outskirts of the Tau-Aurregion, we conclude that only up to one third of the weak-line TTScandidates could be expected to be physically associated with theTau-Aur association. Along with the parallax and proper motion analysisof the non-TTS X-ray sources around the Tau-Aur SFR, our result suggeststhat the vast majority of the young active X-ray sources within anangular diameter of about 30 ° of the Tau-Aur SFR, belong to fourmain subgroups that are spatially separate.

The Geneva-Copenhagen survey of the Solar neighbourhood. Ages, metallicities, and kinematic properties of ˜14 000 F and G dwarfs
We present and discuss new determinations of metallicity, rotation, age,kinematics, and Galactic orbits for a complete, magnitude-limited, andkinematically unbiased sample of 16 682 nearby F and G dwarf stars. Our˜63 000 new, accurate radial-velocity observations for nearly 13 500stars allow identification of most of the binary stars in the sampleand, together with published uvbyβ photometry, Hipparcosparallaxes, Tycho-2 proper motions, and a few earlier radial velocities,complete the kinematic information for 14 139 stars. These high-qualityvelocity data are supplemented by effective temperatures andmetallicities newly derived from recent and/or revised calibrations. Theremaining stars either lack Hipparcos data or have fast rotation. Amajor effort has been devoted to the determination of new isochrone agesfor all stars for which this is possible. Particular attention has beengiven to a realistic treatment of statistical biases and errorestimates, as standard techniques tend to underestimate these effectsand introduce spurious features in the age distributions. Our ages agreewell with those by Edvardsson et al. (\cite{edv93}), despite severalastrophysical and computational improvements since then. We demonstrate,however, how strong observational and theoretical biases cause thedistribution of the observed ages to be very different from that of thetrue age distribution of the sample. Among the many basic relations ofthe Galactic disk that can be reinvestigated from the data presentedhere, we revisit the metallicity distribution of the G dwarfs and theage-metallicity, age-velocity, and metallicity-velocity relations of theSolar neighbourhood. Our first results confirm the lack of metal-poor Gdwarfs relative to closed-box model predictions (the ``G dwarfproblem''), the existence of radial metallicity gradients in the disk,the small change in mean metallicity of the thin disk since itsformation and the substantial scatter in metallicity at all ages, andthe continuing kinematic heating of the thin disk with an efficiencyconsistent with that expected for a combination of spiral arms and giantmolecular clouds. Distinct features in the distribution of the Vcomponent of the space motion are extended in age and metallicity,corresponding to the effects of stochastic spiral waves rather thanclassical moving groups, and may complicate the identification ofthick-disk stars from kinematic criteria. Kinematics of chromospherically active binaries and evidence of an orbital period decrease in binary evolution
The kinematics of 237 chromospherically active binaries (CABs) werestudied. The sample is heterogeneous with different orbits andphysically different components from F to M spectral-type main-sequencestars to G and K giants and supergiants. The computed U, V, W spacevelocities indicate that the sample is also heterogeneous in velocityspace. That is, both kinematically younger and older systems exist amongthe non-evolved main sequence and the evolved binaries containing giantsand subgiants. The kinematically young (0.95 Gyr) subsample (N= 95),which is formed according to the kinematical criteria of moving groups,was compared with the rest (N= 142) of the sample (3.86 Gyr) toinvestigate any observational clues of binary evolution. Comparing theorbital period histograms between the younger and older subsamples,evidence was found supporting the finding of Demircan that the CABs losemass (and angular momentum) and evolve towards shorter orbital periods.The evidence of mass loss is noticeable on the histograms of the totalmass (Mh+Mc), which is compared between theyounger (only N= 53 systems available) and older subsamples (only N= 66systems available). The orbital period decrease during binary evolutionis found to be clearly indicated by the kinematical ages of 6.69, 5.19and 3.02 Gyr which were found in the subsamples according to the periodranges of logP<= 0.8, 0.8 < logP<= 1.7 and 1.7 < logP<=3, respectively, among the binaries in the older subsample.

Observations of Star-Forming Regions with the Midcourse Space Experiment
We have imaged seven nearby star-forming regions, the Rosette Nebula,the Orion Nebula, W3, the Pleiades, G300.2-16.8, S263, and G159.6-18.5,with the Spatial Infrared Imaging Telescope on the Midcourse SpaceExperiment (MSX) satellite at 18" resolution at 8.3, 12.1, 14.7, and21.3 μm. The large angular scale of the regions imaged (~7.2-50deg2) makes these data unique in terms of the combination ofsize and resolution. In addition to the star-forming regions, twocirrus-free fields (MSXBG 160 and MSXBG 161) and a field near the southGalactic pole (MSXBG 239) were also imaged. Point sources have beenextracted from each region, resulting in the identification over 500 newsources (i.e., no identified counterparts at other wavelengths), as wellas over 1300 with prior identifications. The extended emission from thestar-forming regions is described, and prominent structures areidentified, particularly in W3 and Orion. The Rosette Nebula isdiscussed in detail. The bulk of the mid-infrared emission is consistentwith that of photon-dominated regions, including the elephant trunkcomplex. The central clump, however, and a line of site toward thenorthern edge of the cavity show significantly redder colors than therest of the Rosette complex.

MSC - a catalogue of physical multiple stars
The MSC catalogue contains data on 612 physical multiple stars ofmultiplicity 3 to 7 which are hierarchical with few exceptions. Orbitalperiods, angular separations and mass ratios are estimated for eachsub-system. Orbital elements are given when available. The catalogue canbe accessed through CDS (Strasbourg). Half of the systems are within 100pc from the Sun. The comparison of the periods of close and widesub-systems reveals that there is no preferred period ratio and allpossible combinations of periods are found. The distribution of thelogarithms of short periods is bimodal, probably due to observationalselection. In 82\% of triple stars the close sub-system is related tothe primary of a wide pair. However, the analysis of mass ratiodistribution gives some support to the idea that component masses areindependently selected from the Salpeter mass function. Orbits of wideand close sub-systems are not always coplanar, although thecorresponding orbital angular momentum vectors do show a weak tendencyof alignment. Some observational programs based on the MSC aresuggested. RS CVn Versus Algol-Type Binaries: A Comparative Study of Their X-Ray Emission

We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star,when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

ASCA and ROSAT observations of NRAO 140 and IX Persei
We report the results from observations of National Radio AstronomyObservatory (NRAO) 140 carried out in the X-ray band using ROSAT andAdvanced Satellite for Cosmology and Astrophysics (ASCA) in 1992 and1994. We find the source to be absorbed by an effective hydrogen columndensity of approximately 3 x 1021 atoms/sq cm during bothepochs, consistent with the combined atomic and molecular columninferred from radio measurements along this line of sight through thePerseus cloud complex. We compare these results with previous X-rayabsorption measurements and briefly comment upon the origin of theexcess absorption which has been seen toward this source. We find theASCA spectrum of NRAO 140 is well described by a power law of energyindex alpha = 0.73 +/- 0.03 and also yields the tightest constraint todate on Fe K-shell emission, with 90% confidence upper limits of 38 and31 eV for a narrow line at a rest frame energy of 6.4 and 6.7 keVrespectively. This, along with a lack of hardening towards higherenergies, suggests that either NRAO 140 is devoid of cold reprocessingmaterial, the reprocessing material has a geometry in which theimprinted features are weak, and/or the X-ray emission isrelativistically beamed towards us. We also report the detection of aserendipitous source in both the Advanced Satellite for Cosmology andAstrophysics Gas Imaging Spectrometer (ASCA GIS) and ROSAT fields ofview. We identify this source as the binary star system IX Per and findits spectrum to be well fitted by a two-temperature Raymond-Smithplasma.

Stroemgren photometry of F- and G-type stars brighter than V = 9.6. I. UVBY photometry
Within the framework of a large photometric observing program, designedto investigate the Galaxy's structure and evolution, Hβ photometryis being made for about 9000 stars. As a by-product, supplementary uvbyphotometry has been made. The results are presented in a cataloguecontaining 6924 uvby observations of 6190 stars, all south ofδ=+38deg. The overall internal rms errors of one observation(transformed to the standard system) of a program star in the interval6.5

A preliminary compilation of DS-programme star positions
A catalog is presented of the double-star-program (DS-program) starpositions, listing right ascensions for 930 DSs and declinations for1225 DSs of the program. The positions were compiled from the observedvalues obtained between 1980 and 1987 with the meridian circles of sixUSSR observatories (the Moscow, Kazan', Kiev, Khar'kov, Odessa, andTashkent Observatories) and the Belgrade Observatory. The measurementsand the treatment of the observational material were performed using therelative method, and the FK-4 system stars were used as reference stars.

Radio continuum and X-ray properties of the coronae of RS Canum Venaticorum and related active binary systems
Data from circular polarization measurements are reported which yieldradio-continuum and X-ray characterizations of the coronae of activebinaries including RS CVn. The circular polarization measurements aretaken at 6 cm for 28 binary systems detected at flux densities of morethan 0.7 mJy, and the data are examined in conjunction with those byDrake et al. (1989). Optical positions are derived for 8 RS CVn objects,three previous detections are confirmed, and seven sources are shown tohave circular polarization at levels of 2-13 percent. A total of 49X-ray sources are confirmed in a total of 190 positions, and thecorrelation between X-ray and radio emissions is analyzed. Noobservational evidence exists to support the notion that radio and X-rayemissions are due to nonthermal electrons, and the data provide evidencefor and against thermal gyrosynchrotron radio emission.

Eclipsing binaries in multiple-star systems
Some 80 eclipsing binaries that are components of multiple-star systemsare considered. Orbits for the third components of these systems aredetermined for only a relatively small number of cases, and all of thesethat have been published to date are presented. Triple-star systems areby far the most common of these, but one system in five is a quadrupleor higher-order system. Eclipsing binaries in compact star clusters suchas SZ Camelopardalis and the two binaries in Trapezium, BM Ori, and V1016 Ori are also considered. The physical and orbital properties of themultiple star systems are discussed in detail in cases where the dataare fairly complete. In triple-star systems with eclipsing binaries theratio of P2/P1 ranges from less than 10 (for Lambda Tauri) to more than10 exp 7 in some cases. The questions of coplanarity of orbits and themembership of components in multiple-star systems are also examined.

A survey of the radio continuum emission of RS Canum Venaticorum and related active binary systems
Observations of 77 RS CVn and related active binary systems were madewith VLA at a continuum frequency of 4.86 GHz. The results are combinedwith other VLA observations to produce a total number of observedsources of 122. A search for correlations of radio properties withvarious systemic and stellar parameters is performed. Significantcorrelations are found between the normalized radio luminosityL(6)/L(bol) and the normalized soft X-ray luminosity L(x)/L(bol). It issuggested that the close correlation between low-level 6-cm emission andthe hot component of the soft X-ray emission observed by the Einsteinsolid state spectrometer is caused by both emissions being produced bythe same thermal electrons.

The ellipsoidal variables. IV - Light variations
The Delta(V) variations of ellipsoidal variables are investigated as afunction of the spectral type of the primary. A model is developed onthe assumption that the primary has near main-sequence characteristics.It is argued that the observed minimum in the Delta(V) variations aroundspectral type F is real and is due to variations in thegravity-darkening exponent beta. The absolute upper limit to Delta(V)variations is found to be about 0.2 mag.

The ellipsoidal variables. III - Circularization and synchronization
The degree of orbital circularity and synchronism is employed toestimate the degree of tidal interaction in the ellipsoidal variablesystems. Despite the many varied systems contained under the ellipsoidalvariable classification, most of the orbits are found to be circularizedand synchronized for periods of the variation of the eccentricity ofless than about two. Evolutionary models of the more extreme systems areconsidered.

The ellipsoidal variables
The existing database on ellipsoidal, short period binary star systemsis examined analytically. The survey covers 27 binaries with periods ofno more than 10 days. It is shown that binaries with periods of no morethan 5 days are separated by no more than five times the sum of theirradii, indicating that tidal interactions are nonnegligible. Furthercalculations demonstrate that most short period systems will synchronizetheir orbits during the Main Sequence, then evolve to circular orbits inthe sub-giant phase. The distortions which can be expected along thecenterlines of stars in the Main Sequence is described analytically,noting that the distortion takes the form of an expansion into the Rochelobe. The models are used to generate light curves for suspectedellipsoidal variables, e.g., beta Lyrae, with satisfactory results.Similarly, the spectroscopic signatures of ellipsoidal systems exhibitdual peaked features which vary, a characteristic which can also beunderstood in terms of the filling of the Roche lobe.

Hyades and Sirius supercluster members brighter than magnitude(V) 7.1. I - The first six hours of right ascension
This is the first of four papers listing the probable members of theHyades and Sirius superclusters among stars brighter than V = 7.1 mag.The star sample is contained in the Bright Star Catalogue and itsSupplement, augmented with a further supplement of 550 stars foundduring various observing programs over the past 40 years. Accurate,four-color and H-beta, or (RI), photometry is available for most of thesupercluster members. The criteria for membership are the comparisons ofthe proper motion, radial velocity, and luminosity obtained from thesupercluster parameters with the observed motions and the luminosityderived from the photometric parameters. New proper motions, based onall available catalogs, have been derived for the additional 550 starsdiscussed here, as well as for all supercluster members.
