Rotational Velocities of B, A, and Early-F Narrow-lined Stars
Projected rotational velocities for 58 B, A, and early-F stars have beendetermined from high-resolution spectroscopic observations made at KittPeak National Observatory with the coudé feed telescope. All thestars are slowly rotating with vsini<60 km s-1. Because oftheir low rotational velocities, 15 of the stars have been observed asprospective, early-type, radial velocity standards.

Empirical calibration of the near-infrared Ca II triplet - III. Fitting functions
Using a near-infrared stellar library of 706 stars with a wide coverageof atmospheric parameters, we study the behaviour of the CaII tripletstrength in terms of effective temperature, surface gravity andmetallicity. Empirical fitting functions for recently definedline-strength indices, namely CaT*, CaT and PaT, are provided. Thesefunctions can be easily implemented into stellar population models toprovide accurate predictions for integrated CaII strengths. We alsopresent a thorough study of the various error sources and their relationto the residuals of the derived fitting functions. Finally, the derivedfunctional forms and the behaviour of the predicted CaII are comparedwith those of previous works in the field.

Rotational Velocities of B Stars
We measured the projected rotational velocities of 1092 northern B starslisted in the Bright Star Catalogue (BSC) and calibrated them againstthe 1975 Slettebak et al. system. We found that the published values ofB dwarfs in the BSC average 27% higher than those standards. Only 0.3%of the stars have rotational velocities in excess of two-thirds of thebreakup velocities, and the mean velocity is only 25% of breakup,implying that impending breakup is not a significant factor in reducingrotational velocities. For the B8-B9.5 III-V stars the bimodaldistribution in V can be explained by a set of slowly rotating Ap starsand a set of rapidly rotating normal stars. For the B0-B5 III-V starsthat include very few peculiar stars, the distributions in V are notbimodal. Are the low rotational velocities of B stars due to theoccurrence of frequent low-mass companions, planets, or disks? Therotational velocities of giants originating from late B dwarfs areconsistent with their conservation of angular momentum in shells.However, we are puzzled by why the giants that originate from the earlyB dwarfs, despite having 3 times greater radii, have nearly the samerotational velocities. We find that all B-type primaries in binarieswith periods less than 2.4 days have synchronized rotational and orbitalmotions; those with periods between 2.4 and 5.0 days are rotating withina factor 2 of synchronization or are ``nearly synchronized.'' Thecorresponding period ranges for A-type stars are 4.9 and 10.5 days, ortwice as large. We found that the rotational velocities of the primariesare synchronized earlier than their orbits are circularized. The maximumorbital period for circularized B binaries is 1.5 days and for Abinaries is 2.5 days. For stars of various ages from 107.5 to1010.2 yr the maximum circularized periods are a smoothexponential function of age.

Rotational velocities of A-type stars in the northern hemisphere. II. Measurement of v sin i
This work is the second part of the set of measurements of v sin i forA-type stars, begun by Royer et al. (\cite{Ror_02a}). Spectra of 249 B8to F2-type stars brighter than V=7 have been collected at Observatoirede Haute-Provence (OHP). Fourier transforms of several line profiles inthe range 4200-4600 Å are used to derive v sin i from thefrequency of the first zero. Statistical analysis of the sampleindicates that measurement error mainly depends on v sin i and thisrelative error of the rotational velocity is found to be about 5% onaverage. The systematic shift with respect to standard values fromSlettebak et al. (\cite{Slk_75}), previously found in the first paper,is here confirmed. Comparisons with data from the literature agree withour findings: v sin i values from Slettebak et al. are underestimatedand the relation between both scales follows a linear law ensuremath vsin inew = 1.03 v sin iold+7.7. Finally, thesedata are combined with those from the previous paper (Royer et al.\cite{Ror_02a}), together with the catalogue of Abt & Morrell(\cite{AbtMol95}). The resulting sample includes some 2150 stars withhomogenized rotational velocities. Based on observations made atObservatoire de Haute Provence (CNRS), France. Empirical calibration of the near-infrared Ca ii triplet - I. The stellar library and index definition
A new stellar library at the near-IR spectral region developed for theempirical calibration of the Caii triplet and stellar populationsynthesis modelling is presented. The library covers the rangeλλ8348-9020 at 1.5-Å (FWHM) spectral resolution, andconsists of 706 stars spanning a wide range in atmospheric parameters.We have defined a new set of near-IR indices, CaT*, CaT and PaT, whichmostly overcome the limitations of previous definitions, the formerbeing specially suited for the measurement of the Caii triplet strengthcorrected for the contamination from Paschen lines. We also present acomparative study of the new and the previous Ca indices, as well as thecorresponding transformations between the different systems. A thoroughanalysis of the sources of index errors and the procedure to calculatethem is given. Finally, index and error measurements for the wholestellar library are provided together with the final spectra.

The interpretation of Mn II emission from late-type B stars
The photospheric Mn Ii emission lines Wahlgren & Hubrig(\cite{wh2000}) detect in the spectra of several late-type B and HgMnstars and attribute to fluorescent excitation are more naturallyexplained by interlocked non-LTE effects acting in a photosphere inwhich the manganese abundance is stratified with depth. The case isparticularly strong for HD 186122 (46 Aql) and HD 179761 both of whichrequire the manganese overabundance to be concentrated to column massesof log (m)< ~-1.5.

New results of magnetic field diagnosis in HgMn stars and normal late B-type stars
We suggested in a previous paper that three HgMn stars, HD 175640, HD178065, and HD 186122, may be suspected to possess a magnetic field thatcould be larger than 2 kG. We report here new observations of thesethree stars, three more HgMn stars, and four normal late B-type stars.The search was carried out by measuring the equivalent width of the FeII lambda 6147.7 Å line relative to the equivalent width of the FeII lambda 6149.2 Å line. The observed relative differences betweenthe equivalent widths of these Fe II lines are compared with thosederived from synthetic spectra computed by neglecting magnetic fieldeffects. To investigate the effect of oscillator strength uncertaintieson the results, we computed equivalent widths by using both Fe II loggf-values taken from Kurucz & Bell (\cite{KB95}) and Fe II loggf-values taken from Raassen & Uylings (2000). The comparison of thecomputed and observed equivalent widths based on the Kurucz & Bell(\cite{KB95}) atomic data leads us to conclude that all the stars of oursample, except HD 175640, are very likely to possess a magnetic field.On the other hand, the comparison of the computed and observedequivalent widths based on the Raassen & Uylings (2000) loggf-values suggests the possible presence of magnetic fields only inthree stars, the HgMn star HD 16717 and the two normal B-type stars HD179761 and HD 186568. The latter two are those in the sample with thelargest vsin i (15 km s-1 and 18 km s-1,respectively), so that the results for them are the most uncertain ones.

Emission lines in the spectra of late-B type stars
We report detections of weak emission lines in the red spectral regionof sharp-lined chemically normal and peculiar (HgMn) late-B type starsfrom high spectral resolution and high signal-to-noise data. Mostemission lines originate from high-excitation states of the ions Cr IIand Mn II, with others likely to be attributed to Ti II and Fe II. Theemission is observed to extend over the entire line profile width forrotational velocities up to 18 km s-1, implying that itoriginates within the same rotational framework as the absorption linespectrum. Within the sample no obvious correlation is noted for thepresence of emission with regard to stellar effective temperature orluminosity. A dependence upon element abundance is evident from theabsence of Mn II emission for HgMn stars for which the manganeseenhancement is greater than 1.3 dex. This trend is mildly reinforced bythe chromium emission spectrum being most developed amongst stars richerin chromium. We postulate that the Cr II and Mn II emissions in the redspectral region arise from a selective excitation process involvinghydrogen Lyalpha photon energies.

Radial velocities. Measurements of 2800 B2-F5 stars for HIPPARCOS
Radial velocities have been determined for a sample of 2930 B2-F5 stars,95% observed by the Hipparcos satellite in the north hemisphere and 80%without reliable radial velocity up to now. Observations were obtainedat the Observatoire de Haute Provence with a dispersion of 80Ä,mm(-1) with the aim of studying stellar and galactic dynamics.Radial velocities have been measured by correlation with templates ofthe same spectral class. The mean obtained precision is 3.0 km s(-1)with three observations. A new MK spectral classification is estimatedfor all stars. The ROSAT all-sky survey catalogue of optically bright OB-type stars.
For the detailed statistical analysis of the X-ray emission of hot starswe selected all stars of spectral type O and B listed in the Yale BrightStar Catalogue and searched for them in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey. Inthis paper we describe the selection and preparation of the data andpresent a compilation of the derived X-ray data for a complete sample ofbright OB stars.

We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star,when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

An atlas of the infrared spectral region. I. The early type stars (O-G0).
The Atlas illustrates the behavior of early type stars (O, B, A and Ftype) in the near infrared 8375-8770A region at a resolution of aboutone A. Intensity tracings of 76 stars are presented. Of these 51 starscover the spectral range O to G0 and luminosity classes V, III, Ib andIa. The influence of the rotational velocity is also illustrated as wellas the spectra of 19 stars with spectral peculiarities. The completeAtlas is also available under catalog number 3183 from the CDSStrasbourg and other data centers.

Reliable photometric reductions to the standard UBV (or uvby) system and accurate UBV magnitudes of bright standard stars from the northern part of the international Be program
A modified method of computer reduction of UBV (or uvby) photoelectricobservations to standard systems, which combines advantages of what hasso far been achieved in this area, is described in detail. A completereduction of over 46000 UBV observations obtained at Hvar Observatorybetween 1972 and 1991, and of nearly 5000 UBV observations secured atSkalnate Pleso Observatory between 1980 and 1987, was carried out usingthe new technique. It is argued that replacing the original Johnson'sUBV values for the non-variable stars that were observed by the meanvalues based on repeated observations over several years and applyingthe new reduction technique can ensure a stable reproduction of UBVmagnitudes, obviously quite close to the standard Johnson's ones, overmany years and from observatories situated at very different altitudesabove sea level within about 0.01mag in all three UBV magnitudes. A listof new accurate mean UBV values of 191 stars which were regularlyobserved at Hvar - and a part of them also at Skalnate Pleso - ascomparison, check and standard stars in the Be- and Ap-star observingprograms, is included for future use by photometric observers in theNorthern Hemisphere. For a number of these stars, we can guaranteesecular constancy within 0.mag01 during the past 5 to 15 years.

Spectroscopic binaries in the Alpha Persei cluster
An average of 16 radial velocity measures for each of the 28 brightest(B3-A2) cluster members and found four binaries was obtained. Theresulting binary frequency of 14 percent is, like the previous 20percent for the B6-A1 stars in the Pleiades, unusually low compared witha typical 30 percent for early-type field stars or with 30 percent ormore in other open clusters. These two clusters are the only known oneswith unusually high mean rotational velocities. It is suspected that themean rotational velocities are high either because these clusters lackshort-period binaries or are not old enough for synchronization ofrotational and orbital velocities to have occurred. The four AlphaPersei binaries are all relatively wide ones (greater than 20 d) andwith small mass ratios (0.1-0.5). The same results apply to the youngOrion Nebula cluster. These results can be explained in terms of theformation of binaries by capture in that during the first free-falltime, capture will produce wide binaries with small mass ratios, as inthe Orion Nebula and Alpha Persei clusters, but repeated captures anddisruptions will produce more closely spaced binaries with many massratios near 1.0, as in IC 4665.

New data on the eclipsing binary V1765 CYG (HR 7551) and improved orbital and light-curve solutions
Photometric and spectroscopic data on the eclipsing binary are setforth, and a combined orbital and photometric solution is developedbased on the available information. The radial velocity data areanalyzed with the SPEL and FOTEL programs, and the possibility ofapsidal motion is examined with two subsets of the velocities. Thephotometric data are reduced by the standard Johnson system and lineartransformation equations, and the preferred solutions are discussed. Theresulting parameters include the mass and radius of the primary andsecondary, the eccentricity, and other physical information. The apsidalmotion identified by Mayer and Chochol (1981) is confirmed, and thedistance to the system is given as 1.7-1.8 kpc. The stars' rotation rateis approximately the pseudosynchronous rotation rate, and the primaryapproaches its limit of stability at each periastron passage.

The measurement of precise radial velocities of early type stars
Methods are discussed which have made it possible to measure radialvelocities to within 1-3 km/s for O, B, and A spectral-type stars of allv sin i. The methods are based on the premise that neither the spectraltype nor the rotation velocity of a star need be well known prior to thevelocity measurement. This makes them particularly suitable for surveystudies or programs dealing with very heterogeneous samples of earlystars. Observations of early type members of the Pleiades and AlphaPersei open clusters at 3787 A shown that the radial-velocity zero pointused here for the early type stars is consistent with that for late-typestars to about 1 km/s for all spectral types and projected rotationvelocities.

Radial-velocity measurements in 20 young open clusters
The further results of a program to determine the radial velocities ofyoung open clusters are presented. Using the KPNO coude spectrographcoupled with the 1-m feed and 2.1-m telescopes, radial velocities havebeen measured for nearly one hundred stars, most of which are ofspectral type B and A, in 20 young clusters. The combination ofinstruments and the use of cross-correlation techniques show that radialvelocities of B and A type stars as faint as 10th magnitude can bedetermined with an internal precision of less than about 2 km/s. Asexpected, the uncertainties in the velocity determination for the youngclusters are dominated by spectroscopic binary stars in these clusters.A third of the stars in the sample are found to be spectroscopicbinaries, but with a large variation in the frequency of binaries fromcluster to cluster. Because the time coverage is still limited, thisshould be considered a lower limit to the binary frequency. Clustervelocities are determined after eliminating binaries and known nonmemberstars. The new velocities are compared with a model galactic rotationcurve, as well as with previous velocity determinations.

Empirical temperature calibrations for early-type stars
Three temperature calibrations of suitable photometric quantities havebeen derived for O and B stars. A sample of 120 stars with reliableT(eff.) determinations has been used for establishing each calibration.The different calibrations have been critically discussed and compared.Temperature determinations for 1009 program stars have been obtainedwith an accuracy of the order of 10 percent.

Radial velocities in selected B-G stars
Spectroscopic observations of a sample of nearby B-G stars are reported.The observations were obtained at resolution 19 km/s in the spectralregion near the 448.1228-nm line of Mg II using a CCD-detectorspectrograph on the coude-feed telescope at KPNO on April 16-20, 1986.The data are presented in extensive tables and briefly characterized.

Photometric variability of B- and A-type supergiants
Photometric observations of 16 early-type (O9 to A3) supergiants havebeen obtained. All but two of the stars are variable, with a range ofabout 0.05 mag. The light curves are irregular, but characteristic timescales or 'quasi-periods' can be identified. The ratio of thequasi-period to the theoretical period (for pulsation in the fundamentalradial mode) varies from 2-10 in the earliest-type supergiants to 0.2-2in the later-type supergiants. The variability is most likely due tononradial pulsation, at least in the O-B-type supergiants.

New UBVRI photometry for 900 supergiants
A description is presented of the results obtained in connection with asystematic program of supergiant photometry on the Johnson UBVRI system.During the eight years after the start of the program, almost 1000 starshave been observed, about 400 three or more times each. The originalselection of stars used the spectral type catalog of Jaschek et al.(1964) to choose supergiants. Since observations were possible from bothChile and Canada, no declination limits were imposed, and no particularselection criteria were imposed other than to eliminate carbon stars.These are so red as to require enormous extrapolations of thetransformation equations.

Possible iron abundance variations among superficially normal A stars
The wavelength coincidence statistics (WCS) method is used to examinethe high-dispersion spectra of a sample of superficially normal late Band early A stars selected on the basis of low projected rotationalvelocities. Two lists of about 70 strong and weak Fe II lines were used,and line intensities predicted for 10,000 K. On the basis of WCS forstars having published fine analyses, it is suggested that several starsin the sample are deficient in iron and may have sharper-lined spectrathan the weak-lined A or Lambda Bootis stars previously recognized. Itis further suggested that weak-lined stars, which may represent a largefraction of the late B and early A stars, may have a part of theirpeculiar chemistry arising from small abundance fluctuations in theinterstellar medium.

A high-resolution study of superficially normal late B spectra
High-dispersion observations of 13 sharp-lined spectra of late B starsare intercompared. All stars had MK types and appeared superficiallynormal. Two of these objects are clearly related to the manganese stars,while a third may be a 'hot, hot Am'. The selection effect arising fromthe difficulty of detecting mild hot manganese stars is discussed.

Stellar abundances from line statistics
The method of linear statistical modeling has been combined with arudimentary model of stellar photospheres to obtain abundance estimatesfor a large member of normal and peculiar upper-main-sequence stars. Theadopted standard abundances, obtained from published fine analyses, canbe fitted by the algorithms with about 0.5 dex as the standarddeviation. A major advantage of the technique introduced here, based onwavelength coincidences, is that the statistical presence ofintrinsically faint stellar lines plays a key role. This can minimizesystematic errors due to curve-of-growth-saturation effects. Errors dueto misidentified features are also minimized. In spite of theseadvantages, the present method is advocated as an ancillary tool foruse, ultimately, in the improvement of results obtained by moretraditional methods. Abundances, rounded to the nearest 0.5 dex, arereported for Cr, Mn, Fe, and Y. The largest ranges of abundances arefound for chromium and yttrium. A remarkable constancy has been foundfor iron.

Late B-type stars - Rotation and the incidence of HgMn stars
High-dispersion spectrograms for an unbiased sample of 256 late B-typestars are examined in an attempt to determine whether slow rotation isnecessary and sufficient for the appearance of HgMn anomalies innonmagnetic stars. The peculiar stars in the sample are identified,values of v sin i are derived for all the stars observed, and theradial-velocity variations of the identified HgMn stars are analyzed.The distribution of rotational velocities for late B-type stars isobtained, and the role of rotation in producing extended envelopes isevaluated. The binary frequency and mass-ratio distribution are derivedfor systems containing HgMn components, the effect of duplicity on thedistribution of rotational velocities is estimated, and the role of suchfactors as rotation, age, and binary characteristics in determiningwhether HgMn anomalies are present is investigated. The results clearlyshow that HgMn stars occur only within a limited temperature range, thatall such stars rotate slowly, but that rotation, effective temperature,age, surface gravity, and binary properties do not serve to determinewhether a star will exhibit abundance anomalies.

Duplicity of late B-type stars
High-dispersion spectroscopic observations of 83 stars are used todetermine the binary characteristics of late B-type stars. For a randomsample of such objects, including peculiar as well as normal stars, thefrequency of binaries with mass ratios m2/m sub 1 greaterthan 0.1 and orbital periods less than 100 days is estimated to be about24%, and the frequency of binaries decreases with decreasingm2/m sub 1. In both respects, the late B-type stars aresimilar to early B-, late A-, and solar-type stars. For the majority ofstars with an orbital period greater than 4 days, the observedrotational velocity exceeds the value that corresponds to synchronism ofrotation and revolution, but the ratio of the observed to thesynchronous rotational velocity seldom exceeds a factor of 2 even forperiods as long as 15 days. An additional 20% of the stars surveyedexhibit low amplitude-velocity variations that, if due to orbitalmotion, correspond to m2 m1 less than 0.1. Themost likely explanation is that these systems are close binary remnantsthat have already passed through the mass-transfer phase, with thepresent secondary being a white dwarf.
