The proper motions of fundamental stars. I. 1535 stars from the Basic FK5
A direct combination of the positions given in the HIPPARCOS cataloguewith astrometric ground-based catalogues having epochs later than 1939allows us to obtain new proper motions for the 1535 stars of the BasicFK5. The results are presented as the catalogue Proper Motions ofFundamental Stars (PMFS), Part I. The median precision of the propermotions is 0.5 mas/year for mu alpha cos delta and 0.7mas/year for mu delta . The non-linear motions of thephotocentres of a few hundred astrometric binaries are separated intotheir linear and elliptic motions. Since the PMFS proper motions do notinclude the information given by the proper motions from othercatalogues (HIPPARCOS, FK5, FK6, etc.) this catalogue can be used as anindependent source of the proper motions of the fundamental stars.Catalogue (Table 3) is only available at the CDS via anonymous ftp tocdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strastg.fr/cgi-bin/qcat?J/A+A/365/222

Sixth Catalogue of Fundamental Stars (FK6). Part I. Basic fundamental stars with direct solutions
The FK6 is a suitable combination of the results of the HIPPARCOSastrometry satellite with ground-based data, measured over more than twocenturies and summarized in the FK5. Part I of the FK6 (abbreviatedFK6(I)) contains 878 basic fundamental stars with direct solutions. Suchdirect solutions are appropriate for single stars or for objects whichcan be treated like single stars. From the 878 stars in Part I, we haveselected 340 objects as "astrometrically excellent stars", since theirinstantaneous proper motions and mean (time-averaged) ones do not differsignificantly. Hence most of the astrometrically excellent stars arewell-behaving "single-star candidates" with good astrometric data. Thesestars are most suited for high-precision astrometry. On the other hand,199 of the stars in Part I are Δμ binaries in the sense ofWielen et al. (1999). Many of them are newly discovered probablebinaries with no other hitherto known indication of binarity. The FK6gives, besides the classical "single-star mode" solutions (SI mode),other solutions which take into account the fact that hidden astrometricbinaries among "apparently single-stars" introduce sizable "cosmicerrors" into the quasi-instantaneously measured HIPPARCOS proper motionsand positions. The FK6 gives in addition to the SI mode the "long-termprediction (LTP) mode" and the "short-term prediction (STP) mode". TheseLTP and STP modes are on average the most precise solutions forapparently single stars, depending on the epoch difference with respectto the HIPPARCOS epoch of about 1991. The typical mean error of anFK6(I) proper motion in the single-star mode is 0.35 mas/year. This isabout a factor of two better than the typical HIPPARCOS errors for thesestars of 0.67 mas/year. In the long-term prediction mode, in whichcosmic errors are taken into account, the FK6(I) proper motions have atypical mean error of 0.50 mas/year, which is by a factor of more than 4better than the corresponding error for the HIPPARCOS values of 2.21mas/year (cosmic errors included).

Comparison of the ACRS and PPM Catalogs with the FK5 in the Southern Hemisphere
A comparison of the Astrographical Catalog of Reference Stars (ACRS) andthe Positions and Proper Motions Catalog (PPM) with the FK5 in thesouthern hemisphere, is presented. To this aim, the positions of FK5stars uniformly spread over the celestial sphere were astrographicallytaken. These positions were reduced in the ACRS and PPM systems and thencompared with those from the FK5 for the epoch of observation. The (FK5- ACRS) and (FK5 - PPM) systematic differences thus obtained, in thedeclination range from -30o down to the South Pole, for themean epoch of 1994.50, are shown.

Red and infrared colours of B stars and the reddening law in the Galaxy
The red and infrared intrinsic colours of B stars are derived fromphotometric observations through the UBV(RI)_CJHK and Hβ filters of257 early-type stars. Those stars for which the UBV and Hβmeasurements match the published spectral class, and which show no othersigns of peculiarity, are used to determine the intrinsic photometriccolours of B stars in the red and infrared. From these intrinsic coloursthe interstellar reddening relationships for the red and infraredcolours are evaluated, and the results are compared with previousestimates of these quantities. The values of R, E(B-V) and the distanceare then determined for the individual stars. R is confirmed to be closeto 3.1 in most cases, but was found to be much larger in somedirections. The relationship between R and the location of a star in theGalaxy is investigated. Usually the abnormally reddened stars seemed tobe associated with known regions of star formation. The paper alsoidentifies seven likely variable stars and a number of stars withpossible dust shells.

The ROSAT all-sky survey catalogue of optically bright OB-type stars.
For the detailed statistical analysis of the X-ray emission of hot starswe selected all stars of spectral type O and B listed in the Yale BrightStar Catalogue and searched for them in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey. Inthis paper we describe the selection and preparation of the data andpresent a compilation of the derived X-ray data for a complete sample ofbright OB stars.

Vitesses radiales. Catalogue WEB: Wilson Evans Batten. Subtittle: Radial velocities: The Wilson-Evans-Batten catalogue.
We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star, when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

A homogeneous catalog of new UBV and H-beta photometry of B- and A-type stars in and around the Scorpius-Centaurus OB association
B- and A-type stars in and near the Sco-Cen OB association areinvestigated with UBV and H-beta photometry to acquire data relevant tothe luminosity function of Sco-Cen. The measurements generally consistof two 10-s integrations of U, B, V, (W, N) filters, and theobservations are corrected iteratively for atmospheric extinction andinstrumental response. The data presented give the mean V magnitude, mean B-V, mean U-B, and the estimated uncertainties for these values. The catalog provides a homogeneous catalog of data for a large fieldwith stellar objects delineating membership to the association Sco-Cenand that affect the luminosity function of the aggregate.

The spectral energy distribution of early-type stars. II - The extinction law towards O-type stars
Photometric measurements through different pass-bands are used todetermine the color-excess E(B-V) for O-type stars in the UV and IRspectral regions. The results are used to examine the extinctioncharacter of the stars. It is found that, in the UV, each O-type starhas its own extinction character. In general, the visual and NIRextinction in the direction of O-type stars are normal.

Empirical temperature calibrations for early-type stars
Three temperature calibrations of suitable photometric quantities havebeen derived for O and B stars. A sample of 120 stars with reliableT(eff.) determinations has been used for establishing each calibration. The different calibrations have been critically discussed and compared.Temperature determinations for 1009 program stars have been obtainedwith an accuracy of the order of 10 percent.

Santiago declination catalogue - A declination catalogue of 412 FK4 stars (equinox 1950.0)
This catalog contains the positions in declination, of 412 FK4 stars. The observations were carried out with the Repsold Meridian Circle atCerro Calan National Astronomical Observatory, during the period1963-1968. The average mean square error of one observation (for thewhole catalog) is + or - 0.13 arcsec. The mean epoch of observation ofthe catalog is 1965.75.

On optical studies of high-velocity clouds
Lists of distant objects that can be used to study physical conditionsin, and distances of, 21 cm (Oort) high-velocity clouds are presented.Recent published observations are used to compile positions, velocities, and distances of the clouds.

The spectral energy distribution of early type stars. I - A catalogue of photometric data of 259 stars from 0.15 to 4.8 microns
For the derivation of physical parameters (e.g., effective temperatureand radius) of early-type stars from their intrinsic spectral-energydistribution, and for the study of foreground interstellar and/orcircumstellar matter, a sample of 237 O, B, and A stars was chosen fromthe ANS catalog (Wesselius et al., 1982). The ANS ultraviolet and theJohnson UBV data (mostly from Nicolet's catalog, 1978) of these starswere supplemented with visual Walraven WULBV, red VRI, and near-infraredJHKLM measurements. All these data are given in the present catalog.Data for 22 stars of spectral type later than A are also included.

A catalog of ultraviolet interstellar extinction excesses for 1415 stars
Ultraviolet interstellar extinction excesses are presented for 1415stars with spectral types B7 and earlier. The excesses with respect to Vare derived from Astronomical Netherlands Satellite (ANS) 5-channel UVphotometry at central wavelengths of approximately 1550, 1800, 2500, and3300 A. A measure of the excess extinction in the 2200-A extinction bumpis also given. The data are valuable for investigating the systematicsof peculiar interstellar extinction and for studying the character of UVinterstellar extinction in the general direction of stars for which theextinction-curve shape is unknown.

The local system of early type stars - Spatial extent and kinematics
Published uvby and H-beta photometric data and proper motions arecompiled and analyzed to characterize the structure and kinematics ofthe bright early-type O-A0 stars in the solar vicinity, with a focus onthe Gould belt. The selection and calibration techniques are explained, and the data are presented in extensive tables and graphs and discussedin detail. The Gould belt stars of age less than 20 Myr are shown togive belt inclination 19 deg to the Galactic plane and node-lineorientation in the direction of Galactic rotation, while the symmetricaldistribution about the Galactic plane and kinematic properties (purecircular differential rotation) of the belt stars over 60 Myr oldresemble those of fainter nonbelt stars of all ages. The unresolveddiscrepancy between the expansion observed in the youngest nearby starsand the predictions of simple models of expansion from a point isattributed to the inhomogeneous distribution of interstellar matter.

On the nature of early-type stars in the galactic halo
Effective temperatures and surface gravities of 46 intermediate and highgalactic latitude OB stars have been estimated from Stromgren /C1/ andH-beta photometry. In addition, helium, calcium and magnesium abundancesrelative to hydrogen have been derived for eleven stars. The typicalOB-type stellar parameters indicate that they are normal Population Istars, several of which require ejection velocities of more than 100km/s from the plane in order to reach their present z-distances duringtheir lifetimes. The observed correlation between peculiar velocity andmass for stars with /z/ not less than 400 pc is compatible with theBlaauw runaway hypothesis as the acceleration mechanism. A plot of logN(Na I) versus E(B-V) implies that the gas-to-dust ratio in the halo isprobably similar to that found for material in the galactic disc. Thisimplies that the sputtering of calcium from grain surfaces is probablyresponsible for the observed velocity dependence of the N(Na I)/N(Ca II)ratio.

A survey of ultraviolet objects
An all-sky survey of ultraviolet objects is presented together with astatistical analysis that leads to the conclusion that there is asignificantly higher population of hot subdwarfs lying below themain-sequence than hitherto thought. The distribution of all ultravioletobjects, main sequence ultraviolet objects, and MK unclassifiedultraviolet objects are shown in galactic coordinates, and the absolutemagnitudes and color-color diagrams for these groups are presented.Scale heights are derived, giving values similar to planetary nebulaefor the hottest groups.

Astrophysical properties of red giants in three open clusters older than the Hyades
The application to the program stars of two independent membershipcriteria based on BV and DDO photometry makes it possible to distinguisha few red field stars from the physical members of the clusters. Inparticular, two stars previously thought to be members of NGC 3680 byEggen (1969) and McClure (1972) are found not to be physically connectedwith this cluster. It is also found that the cluster giants in NGC 2482and IC 4651 have CN strengths nearly identical with the Hyades giants, whereas NGC 3680 is considerably poorer in CN than the above clusters.Within the limits of the DDO photometry, no firm evidence is seen forany intrinsic differences in CN strength among the giants in the threeclusters. This result is valid for the clump stars at the blue end ofthe giant branch in NGC 3680 and IC 4651. Both CMT(1)T(2) and DDO datalend support to the conclusion that IC 4651 is on the metal-rich side ofthe distribution of intermediate and old open clusters. The mass resultsindicate that the clumps stars in NGC 3680 and IC 4651 could haveundergone mass loss before reaching their core burning phase ofevolution.

Search for Beta Cephei stars south of declination -20 deg. II - Photometric and spectrographic observations of early B giants and subgiants - Winter objects
Results of the second part of a program begun in 1975 (Jerzykiewicz andSterken, 1977) are presented. Out of 39 Beta Cephei candidates observedphotometrically, seven turned out to vary with the b ranges exceeding0.020 m, while 21 have been found constant to within 0.010 m or better. For the 56 comparison stars these numbers are 6 and 25, respectively. From spectrographic observations one of the candidates, HD 129557 = HR5488 (B2 III), iis found to be a Beta Cephei variable with a period of0.135 d and the 2 K amplitude of 18.4 km/s. A comparison of the resultsof this program with other recent photometric searches for Beta Cepheivariables shows good agreement in most cases. There are severaldiscrepant stars, however. These are discussed in some detail. Aconclusion emerges that in the low temperature extension of the BetaCephei region, if such an extension exists at all, on-and-off typepulsations occur.

Radial velocities of bright southern stars. I - 139 B-type HR and FK stars
Radial velocity determinations for 139 southern B stars in the BrightStar, FK4, and FK4 Supplement catalogues and for 53 bright southernlate-type stars are presented, based on coudespectrograms taken with theESO 1.5 m telescope at La Silla. The programs, observations, measurements, and reductions are described. Among the data presented arethe visual magnitude, spectral class, mean error, E/T variabilityparameter, velocity of interstellar lines, and rotation class.

Copernicus observations of the N V resonance doublet in 53 early-type stars
UV spectra in the wavelength interval 1170-1270 A are presented for 53early-type stars ranging in spectral type from O6.5 V to B2.5 IV. Thesample includes four Wolf-Rayet stars, seven known Oe-Be stars, and sixgalactic halo OB stars. A qualitative analysis of the stellar N vdoublet reveals that: (1) N v is present in all stars hotter and moreluminous than type B0 for the main sequence, B1 for giants, and B2 forsupergiants; (2) shell components of N v and an unidentified absorptionfeature at 1230 A are present in about half of the stars; (3) the columndensity of N v is well correlated with bolometric luminosity over thespectral range O6 to B2; and (4) the ratio of emission to absorptionequivalent width is a factor of 2 smaller in the main sequence starsthan in supergiants, which suggests that the wind structure changes as astar evolves. For several stars, this ratio is too small to be explainedby traditional wind models.

Infrared photometry of southern early-type stars
The paper presents infrared photometry tied to the JHKL (1.2-3.5microns) broadband photometric system for 229 southern early-type stars. To determine data for stars of low reddening intrinsic visual-IR colorindices were used; the E(V-K)/E(B-V) diagram was applied to evaluate theratio of total selective extinction. A mean value of R = 3.12 plus orminus 0.05 was found for stars close to the galactic plane, but a highervalue of R (about 4.0) applies to the Orion and Sco-Oph regions.Infrared two-color diagrams were used to investigate the occurrence ofinfrared excess emission in different classes of shell star; no excesseswere found for supergiants or Of stars. It is concluded that theanomalous position HD 164740 in the two-color diagrams is produced bystrong infrared excess and not by a peculiar extinction law.

HR 4453 - an anomalously bright UV source
Crawford et al. (1979) reported that HR 4453 has an anomalously large UVflux in the 1350-1600 A band. This paper reports results of the UVspectrophotometry of HR 4453 obtained with the Copernicus satellite.Portions of the spectrum from 1120 to 2660 A were scanned, but nostellar signal was detected in any wavelength interval. This result isconsistent with both components of the binary being normal A2A stars. UVvariability or a source other than HR 4453 must be invoked to explainthe observations of Crawford et al.

The depletion of interstellar gaseous iron
The Copernicus UV telescope was used to measure equivalent widths ofinterstellar Fe II resonance lines toward 55 early-type stars; themeasurements permit the determination of Fe II column densities. Thedepletion of interstellar gaseous iron was obtained by combining thesemeasurements with the results from a previous atomic and molecularhydrogen survey program; the derived depletions refer mostly to matterin H I regions. As an example, the nearly normal gaseous iron abundancein the distant high-latitude intermediate-velocity cloud toward HD 93521is consistent with the idea that these clouds are produced by galacticsupernova explosions.

A survey of interstellar H I from L-alpha absorption measurements. II
This paper presents interstellar H I column densities, mean H I spacedensities, total neutral hydrogen column densities, and total meanhydrogen space densities toward 100 stars surveyed in the L-alpha regionwith the U2 detector of the Copernicus satellite. The data for 47 starsare compared with OAO 2 results, and ratios of gas to E(B-V) colorexcess are computed for 30 'intercloud' stars, 45 'cloud' stars, and thecombined sample of 75 stars. A definitive value of 5.8 x 10 to the 21stpower atoms/sq cm per mag is obtained for the mean ratio of totalneutral hydrogen to color excess, indicating that this ratio seems to bea constant, independent of location in the sky, except possibly towardstars with anomalous extinction. The anomalous ratio determined for RhoOph is examined, and the galactic distribution of neutral hydrogen isevaluated. The following values are estimated for matter in the galacticplane within 500 pc of the sun: a total mean hydrogen space density of1.15 atoms/cu cm, a mean H2 space density of 0.143 molecule/cu cm(possibly a lower limit), and a mean H I space density of 0.86 atom/cucm (a possible overestimate).

Space velocities and ages of nearby early-type stars
Photometric distances and space velocities have been calculated for 458B0-A0 stars with apparent magnitudes not exceeding 6.5. UsingStromgren's ubvy-beta photometry the effective temperature and theposition in bolometric magnitude over the zero-age main sequence of thestars were derived. These quantities were used to obtain age and massfor 423 of the stars by interpolation in the models of stellar evolutionfor the chemical composition (X Z) = (0.7, 0.03). A relation forderiving interstellar reddening for normal stars in the intermediategroup is given.
