New periodic variables from the Hipparcos epoch photometry
Two selection statistics are used to extract new candidate periodicvariables from the epoch photometry of the Hipparcos catalogue. Theprimary selection criterion is a signal-to-noise ratio. The dependenceof this statistic on the number of observations is calibrated usingabout 30000 randomly permuted Hipparcos data sets. A significance levelof 0.1 per cent is used to extract a first batch of candidate variables.The second criterion requires that the optimal frequency be unaffectedif the data are de-trended by low-order polynomials. We find 2675 newcandidate periodic variables, of which the majority (2082) are from theHipparcos`unsolved' variables. Potential problems with theinterpretation of the data (e.g. aliasing) are discussed.

Absolute proper motions of open clusters. I. Observational data
Mean proper motions and parallaxes of 205 open clusters were determinedfrom their member stars found in the Hipparcos Catalogue. 360 clusterswere searched for possible members, excluding nearby clusters withdistances D < 200 pc. Members were selected using ground basedinformation (photometry, radial velocity, proper motion, distance fromthe cluster centre) and information provided by Hipparcos (propermotion, parallax). Altogether 630 certain and 100 possible members werefound. A comparison of the Hipparcos parallaxes with photometricdistances of open clusters shows good agreement. The Hipparcos dataconfirm or reject the membership of several Cepheids in the studiedclusters. Strömgren and Hβ photometry of OB-stars generally brighterthan 9.5 mag in the Canis Major - Puppis - Vela region of Milky Way isreported. The observations are based on the Milky Way luminous-star (LS)identifications and are designed to create a complete, magnitude-limitedsample of LS for this field. We present new uvby photometry for 127 LSand Hβ photometry for 25 of them. These observations are part of anongoing effort to improve the completeness of the existing uvbybetadata-base for the bright OB-type stars in the Milky Way, with the aim toinvestigate the structure of selected star-forming regions. Based ondata from the Strömgren Automatic Telescope of the CopenhagenAstronomical Observatory, La Silla. UBV beta Database for Case-Hamburg Northern and Southern Luminous Stars
A database of photoelectric UBV beta photometry for stars listed in theCase-Hamburg northern and southern Milky Way luminous stars surveys hasbeen compiled from the original research literature. Consisting of over16,000 observations of some 7300 stars from over 500 sources, thisdatabase constitutes the most complete compilation of such photometryavailable for intrinsically luminous stars around the Galactic plane.Over 5000 stars listed in the Case-Hamburg surveys still lackfundamental photometric data.

A Radial Velocity Database for Stephenson-Sanduleak Southern Luminous Stars

We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star,when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

A spectroscopic database for Stephenson-Sanduleak Southern Luminous Stars
A database of published spectral classifications for objects in theStepenson-Sanduleak Luminous Stars in the Southern Milky Way catalog hasbeen compiled from the literature. A total of 6182 classifications for2562 stars from 139 sources are incorporated.

More radial-velocity measurements in young open clusters
Further high resolution radial-velocity measurements are reported in 23young open clusters using the Kitt Peak CCD coude spectrograph on the0.9-m feed telescope. The radial velocities for the cluster stars arederived with the technique of cross correlation. The internal precisionof the velocity measurements is typically 2 km/s for early type stars.From these new data and previously published velocities, the observedstars in two clusters, NGC 663 and NGC 2287, were found to show arelatively small dispersion in the measured mean velocities. Furtherobservations of stars in young clusters will be useful in helping toestablish an early-type-star-velocity standard system.

Has interstellar forbidden Fe X been detected in the spectrum of SN 1987 A?
The detection of forbidden Fe X is found to be inconsistent with the lowlevels of diffuse X-ray flux identified with the Einstein and RosatX-ray satellites. The observed line can be interpreted as the slightlyredshifted wavelength 6379.3 of the diffuse interstellar band, in whichcase the velocity would equal that of the strong interstellar atomiclines in the spectrum of SN 1987 A. The unique feature is interpreted tobe evidence of variations in the ratios of interstellar lines forabsorbing clouds.

The visually brightest early-type supergiants in the spiral galaxies NGC 2403, M81, and M101
Moderate-resolution spectroscopy of the candidate brightest blue starsin the nearby spirals NGC 2403, M81, and M101 reveals that many are notsingle stars, but compact H II regions, clusters, and multiple systems.This is an additional and serious limitation on their use as distanceindicators. The derivation of the luminosities of the confirmed singleblue supergiants is discussed, and, combining these results withprevious work on the brightest red supergiants, a brief discussion andcomparison of the evolution of their most massive stars are given. Theproperties of the brightest blue and red stars in NGC 2403 and M81 arebasically in agreement with the pattern of massive-star evolutionobserved in Local Group galaxies. The distance to M101 is stillcontroversial, but at the larger distance modulus, the luminosities ofits brightest early and late-type supergiants place them beyond theEddington limit for their initial mass and temperature.

The interstellar 217 NM band - A third catalogue of equivalent widths
A catalog of equivalent widths of the 217 nm interstellar absorptionband as well as other parameters characterizing the extinction curve inthe ultraviolet has been compiled for 790 O and B stars. A relativelytight correlation between the equivalent width of the 217 nm band andE(B-V) indicates that the absorber of this band is connected with thepopulation of larger interstellar grains responsible for the visualextinction. The parameter characterizing the amount of extinction in thefar UV is only weakly correlated with E(B-V), a result in accord withthe assumption that a second population of very small grains causes therapid increase of the far-UV extinction.

Observations of interstellar diffuse absorption band at 4430 A
Observations of the interstellar diffuse absorption band at 4430 A for800 O and B stars in Neckel's (1967) catalog are being carried out, and482 spectra obtained up to September 1983 have been reduced. It isconfirmed that the strength of the interstellar diffuse absorption bandat 4430 A does not simply relate to the abundance of interstellar grainson the line of sight. The relation between the color excess E(B-V) andthe equivalent width of the band to the direction of l = 130-140 deg andb = -5 to +5 deg shows that some parameter(s) other than E(B-V) is (are)needed to understand the cause of this band.

Catalog of O-B stars observed with Tokyo Meridian Circle
A catalog of the O-B stars, selected from 'Blaauw-Parenago' list andRubin's catalog, has been compiled on the FK4 system by the observationsmade with Gautier 8-inch Meridian Circle at the Tokyo AstronomicalObservatory during the period, 1971 to 1979. It contains 1059 stars andwas compiled for the future establishment of high precision propermotions of O-B stars.

A catalog of ultraviolet interstellar extinction excesses for 1415 stars
Ultraviolet interstellar extinction excesses are presented for 1415stars with spectral types B7 and earlier. The excesses with respect to Vare derived from Astronomical Netherlands Satellite (ANS) 5-channel UVphotometry at central wavelengths of approximately 1550, 1800, 2500, and3300 A. A measure of the excess extinction in the 2200-A extinction bumpis also given. The data are valuable for investigating the systematicsof peculiar interstellar extinction and for studying the character of UVinterstellar extinction in the general direction of stars for which theextinction-curve shape is unknown.

Radial velocities for 28 southern young open clusters
Radial velocities for 83 OB-stars in 28 southern young open clusters arepresented. The internal and external accuracy of the data is in goodagreement with results obtained by Ardeberg and Maurice (1977) with thesame equipment. From a comparison with radial velocities existing in theliterature no systematic radial-velocity differences for stars in commonare found.

Membership of stars in faint galactic open clusters
Low-dispersion spectra of the order of 1000 A/mm have been obtained forstars in several faint galactic clusters with a transmission gratingplaced in front of the photographic plate at the Cassegrain focus of theKavalur 102-cm telescope. The intensity distribution in the shorterwavelengths has been taken as the principal criterion for the spectralclassification of the individual stars in the area covered by thephotographic plate. The uncertainty in this procedure has been found tobe about two spectral subclasses. A combination of these spectralclasses with the visual magnitudes derived from the image diameters onthe Palomar Observatory Sky Survey charts provide the HR diagrams foreach cluster area. These diagrams are adequate to establish the clustermembership of any star to a first approximation. This technique has beentested on six galactic open clusters. Good agreement both in terms ofthe ages of the clusters and individual stellar membership is found.

A study of B-type supergiants with the uvby,beta photometric system
The applicability of the uvby,beta photometric system to theclassification and study of B-type supergiants (BTS) is investigatedusing published data on 157 BTS and observations of 17 BTS made with the36-in. reflector at McDonald Observatory. The results are presented intabular form and analyzed to produce preliminary calibrations ofluminosity class vs. beta index and of absolute magnitude (Mv) vs. beta(or delta Mv vs. delta beta) for four associations of stars. Theeffectiveness of various color indices as temperature indicators isdiscussed. It is shown that there is good correspondence between MK anduvby,beta classifications of B-type main-sequence stars, giants, andBTS, confirming the usefulness of the uvby,beta system in furtherresearch on BTS.

New UBVRI photometry for 900 supergiants
A description is presented of the results obtained in connection with asystematic program of supergiant photometry on the Johnson UBVRI system.During the eight years after the start of the program, almost 1000 starshave been observed, about 400 three or more times each. The originalselection of stars used the spectral type catalog of Jaschek et al.(1964) to choose supergiants. Since observations were possible from bothChile and Canada, no declination limits were imposed, and no particularselection criteria were imposed other than to eliminate carbon stars.These are so red as to require enormous extrapolations of thetransformation equations.

Pseudocepheids. I - R Puppis, HR 4441, HR 4511, and AI CMI
Four PC stars which are all thought to be high-mass objects, areconsidered. It is noted that R Pup and HR 4441 are apparentlyvery-high-luminosity stars for which the photometric indices areuncomplicated by photometrically unresolved companions or circumstellarmaterial. HR 4511 is seen as illustrating the effect of a close,early-type companion, and it is believed that the photometry of AI CMimay be strongly affected by circumstellar material. On the basis ofobservations of nonvariable stars covering the magnitude rangerepresented, a mean dispersion of 0.005 mag is expected in all colorindices.

Correlations between the lambda 2200 feature, the diffuse lambda 4430 band, and E/B-V/
The 2200 A extinction feature has been measured from ANS observations of30 stars. For each star, the depth of the 2200 A feature is compared toE(B-V) and the equivalent width of the diffuse band 4430 A. A goodcorrelation appears out to E(B-V) = 1.13. The various mechanisms forproducing the diffuse and 2200 A features are discussed and adiscriminatory test is put forward based on observations of theMagellanic Clouds.

Observations of the diffuse 4430 A absorption band in southern O, B, and A stars
Photoelectric narrow-band observations of the intensity of the diffuseinterstellar 4430 A absorption band have been carried out for 65southern O, B and A stars of luminosity classes I and II. The dependenceof the 4430 A index on stellar spectral lines is eliminated and thevariation of the ratio Jc/E(B-V) of 4430-A wavelength to selectiveabsorption from place to place in the Galaxy is discussed. It is foundthat Jc/E(B-V) is significantly lower in the inter-arm region frominside the inner and outer spiral arms. The observed value of Jc/E(B-V)for HD 153919, the optical component of the binary system containing theX-ray source 2 U 1700-37, indicates a distance of at least 1.5 kpc whichsuggests that it is more luminous and massive than an ordinary O 6 star.
