Magnesium Isotopic Abundance Ratios in Cool Stars From high-resolution spectra of 61 cool dwarfs and giants, Mg isotopicabundance ratios 24Mg:25Mg:26Mg arederived from spectral synthesis of the MgH A-X lines near 5140 Å.Our sample spans the range -2.5<=[Fe/H]<=0.1, including the firstmeasurements of Mg isotope ratios in stars with metallicities below[Fe/H]=-2.0. We confirm the decrease in 25Mg/24Mgand 26Mg/24Mg with decreasing [Fe/H], as predictedby recent models of Galactic chemical evolution in which the Mg isotopesare produced in massive stars. A subset of kinematically identifiedthin-disk stars have Mg isotope ratios in excellent agreement with thepredictions. Within the measurement uncertainties, these thin-disk starsshow no scatter about the predictions. Several of our stars are likelymembers of the thick disk, and their high Mg isotopic ratios may reflectthe nucleosynthetic history of the thick disk, which is distinct fromthe predictions for, and observations of, the thin disk. For thick-diskand halo stars we find a scatter in 25Mg/24Mg and26Mg/24Mg exceeding our measurement uncertaintiesand increasing with increasing metallicity. Our data suggest that anadditional source of 25Mg and 26Mg is required.Intermediate-mass asymptotic giant branch stars are likely candidates.
| New neighbours. V. 35 DENIS late-M dwarfs between 10 and 30 parsecs This paper reports updated results on our systematic mining of the DENISdatabase for nearby very cool M-dwarfs (M 6V-M 8V, 2.0 <= I-J <=3.0, photometric distance within 30 pc), initiated by Phan-Bao et al.(\cite{phan-bao}, hereafter Paper I). We use M dwarfs with well measuredparallaxes (HIP, GCTP, ...) to calibrate the DENIS (MI, I-J)colour-luminosity relationship. The resulting distance error for singledwarfs is about 25%. Proper motions, as well as B and R magnitudes, weremeasured on archive Schmidt plates for those stars in the DENIS databasethat meet the photometric selection criteria. We then eliminate thegiants by a Reduced Proper Motion cutoff, which is significantly moreselective than a simple proper motion cutoff. It greatly reduces theselection bias against low tangential velocity stars, and results in anearly complete sample. Here we present new data for 62 red dwarfcandidates selected over 5700 square degrees in the DENIS database. 26of those originate in the 2100 square degrees analysed in Paper I, withimproved parameters here, and 36 were found in 3600 additional squaredegrees. 25 of those are new nearby dwarfs. We determine from thatsample of 62 stars a stellar density for 12.0 <= MI <=14.0 of /lineΦ{Icor}=(2.2 +/- 0.4)x 10-3 starspc-3 mag-1. This value is consistent withphotometric luminosity functions measured from deeper and smaller-fieldobservations, but not with the nearby star luminosity function. Inaddition we cross-identified the NLTT and DENIS catalogues to find 15similar stars, in parts of the sky not yet covered by thecolour-selected search. We present distance and luminosity estimates forthese 15 stars, 10 of which are newly recognized nearby dwarfs. Asimilar search in Paper I produced 4 red dwarf candidates, and we havethus up to now identified a total of 35 new nearby late-M dwarfs.
| A Search for Cool Subdwarfs: Stellar Parameters for 134 Candidates The results of a search for cool subdwarfs are presented. Kinematic (U,V, and W) and stellar parameters (Teff, logg, [Fe/H], andξt) are derived for 134 candidate subdwarfs based onhigh-resolution spectra. The observed stars span 4200K
| Improved Astrometry and Photometry for the Luyten Catalog. II. Faint Stars and the Revised Catalog We complete construction of a catalog containing improved astrometry andnew optical/infrared photometry for the vast majority of NLTT starslying in the overlap of regions covered by POSS I and by the secondincremental Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) release, approximately 44%of the sky. The epoch 2000 positions are typically accurate to 130 mas,the proper motions to 5.5 mas yr-1, and the V-J colors to0.25 mag. Relative proper motions of binary components are measured to 3mas yr-1. The false-identification rate is ~1% for11<~V<~18 and substantially less at brighter magnitudes. Theseimprovements permit the construction of a reduced proper-motion diagramthat, for the first time, allows one to classify NLTT stars intomain-sequence (MS) stars, subdwarfs (SDs), and white dwarfs (WDs). We inturn use this diagram to analyze the properties of both our catalog andthe NLTT catalog on which it is based. In sharp contrast to popularbelief, we find that NLTT incompleteness in the plane is almostcompletely concentrated in MS stars, and that SDs and WDs are detectedalmost uniformly over the sky δ>-33deg. Our catalogwill therefore provide a powerful tool to probe these populationsstatistically, as well as to reliably identify individual SDs and WDs.
| Revised Coordinates and Proper Motions of the Stars in the Luyten Half-Second Catalog We present refined coordinates and proper-motion data for the highproper-motion (HPM) stars in the Luyten Half-Second (LHS) catalog. Thepositional uncertainty in the original Luyten catalog is typicallygreater than 10" and is often greater than 30". We have used the digitalscans of the POSS I and POSS II plates to derive more accurate positionsand proper motions of the objects. Out of the 4470 candidates in the LHScatalog, 4323 objects were manually reidentified in the POSS I and POSSII scans. A small fraction of the stars were not found because of thelack of finder charts and digitized POSS II scans. The uncertainties inthe revised positions are typically ~2" but can be as high as ~8" in afew cases, which is a large improvement over the original data.Cross-correlation with the Tycho-2 and Hipparcos catalogs yielded 819candidates (with mR<~12). For these brighter sources, theposition and proper-motion data were replaced with the more accurateTycho-2/Hipparcos data. In total, we have revised proper-motionmeasurements and coordinates for 4040 stars and revised coordinates for4330 stars. The electronic version of the paper5 contains the updated information on all 4470stars in the LHS catalog.
| New proper motion determination of Luyten catalogue stars (LTT) with declination between -5(deg) and -30(deg) and right ascension between 0h and 13h 30m Data are given for 353 LTT stars found on 42 areas, covering 25 squaredegrees each, with declination between -5(deg) and -30(deg) and rightascension between 0h and 13h 30m. Nineteen stars present differences inproper motion >= 0('') 10, twenty present differences in positionangle >= 20(deg) and six present those differences in both values.Table 2 only available in electronic foun at CDS viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/Abstract.html. | Astrometric positions of stars with high proper motions in the Southern Hemisphere Several stars with large proper motions, cited by W.J. Luyten, wereincluded in the preliminary programme for the HIPPARCOS mission. Whenperforming preparatory measurements of plates, difficulties wereencountered in identifying certain of these stars when relying only onpublished coordinates. We have taken advantage of this work whichrelates to the southern sky in order to determine the astrometricposition of the greatest possible number of these objects, even forthose which were not included in the programme. | A photometric study of K and M dwarf stars found by Stephenson Broadband photometry has been obtained for a sample of the K and M dwarfstars found in an objective prism survey by Stephenson (1986). Among thestars with unknown proper motion, about 24 percent of those observedappear from the photometry not to be dwarfs, although the percentagevaries considerably with spectral type. For stars with V less than 11.5and B - V equal to or greater than 1.2, it is estimated that, within thearea surveyed, Stephenson's survey is about 68 percent complete.

| Catalog of proper-motion stars. III - Stars brighter than visual magnitude 15.1, south of declination +30 deg, and with annual proper motion between 0.5 and 0.7 arcsec A catalog of (VRI) photometry for the some one thousand stars withannual proper motion between 0.5 and 0.7 arcsec, brighter than visualmagnitude 15.1, and south of declination +30 deg is presented. Theavailable proper-motion and radial-velocity data are also summarized.
| G. P. Kuiper's spectral classifications of proper-motion stars Spectral classifications are listed for over 3200 stars, mainly of largeproper motion, observed and classified by Kuiper during the years1937-1944 at the Yerkes and McDonald Observatories. While Kuiper himselfpublished many of his types, and while improved classifications are nowavailable for many of these stars, much of value remains. For many ofthe objects, no other spectral data exist.
